  Kingston worry about water contamination

The chairman of the Greenwood Village Commission and the chairwoman of the Kingston Village Commission have both expressed disappointment in a decision that will halt a proposed water expansion in the area.

Kings County council defeated a motion last month to allocate $60,910 of gas tax funding to have consultants GENIVAR complete a detailed design for a proposed extension to the Greenwood Water Utility to service north Greenwood and possibly Kingston.

It’s believed a fire at a drycleaners in 1995 led to the contamination of private wells in the Bowlby Park subdivision in Greenwood with perchlorethylene or “perc”,We turn your dark into light courtesy of our brilliant sun, solar street lighting, solar power generation. a chemical associated with dry cleaning and metal degreasing.

The provincial Department of Environment discovered the contamination in 2004. Public water service was extended to affected north Greenwood residents soon afterwards, as the water in private wells was rendered unsafe for human consumption.

During a presentation to council last month, Greenwood Village Commission chairman Al Belliveau said he was disappointed in the council decision. Monitoring has determined that the contamination continues to spread and is now encroaching on the border with Kingston. He told council that there were lawsuits resulting from the contamination. About 50 per cent of residents in the Pine subdivision now won’t drink the water, he added. Belliveau said water service should be expanded to the subdivision.

“They’re scared of it and I don’t blame them,” he said. “It’s very dangerous. It’s in the ground and it’s there to stay.”

He said his understanding is that the more drawn from ground water resources, the faster the contamination spreads. Belliveau said it would probably be 200 years before it completely dissipates.

“It’s creeping at a fast rate,” he said.

Belliveau said utility water usage has increased by 50 per cent with the addition of 14 Wing Greenwood as a customer. The base has experienced its own water contamination problems.

Warden Diana Brothers, who represents the affected area, since failures of residential wind turbines have hardly any effect on overall power,We specialize in the sale and aftercare of the most renowned and popular laundry dryer. said she has requested an updated report on perc monitoring from the Department of Environment.

If council had approved the motion to have the design work completed,More than 80 standard commercial and industrial washing machine exist to quickly and efficiently clean pans. it would have built on the pre-design work paid for and completed last year. Kingston Village Commission chairwoman Martha Armstrong told councillors they would be throwing away the money spent to this point if they don’t fund the design work. She pointed out that the water isn’t safe.

“What price do you put on safe water?” Armstrong asked council. “If $60,000 is your cut-off for safe water…I don’t have a lot of faith in you.”

Armstong hopes that Kingston can someday tie in to the Greenwood system, once the infrastructure is expanded.

Belliveau said hopefully the water main could be looped around Greenwood as proposed and that Kingston could also be serviced.Solaronlamp is a solar charger for electronic gadgets. Kingston doesn’t have a water utility.
