The 2014 BMW X5 marks the luxury sport-utility's third generation. And after 15 years in production, you can finally buy it with rear-wheel drive. All previous X5s have come with standard all-wheel drive, more for on-road performance than ability in the dirt. But if potential buyers were discouraged by the extra weight and expense of an all-wheel-drive X5 before, they're out of excuses now.

The rear-wheel-drive sDrive35i and all-wheel-drive xDrive35i will both use a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder generating 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. BMW says the new all-wheel-drive X5 is 0.2 second quicker from zero to 60 mph (6.2 seconds). The top-trim xDrive50i gets a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 generating 445 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. The new xDrive50i covers zero to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, a 0.4-second improvement. 

Those who tow can opt for the xDrive35d. It uses a revised 3.0-liter turbodiesel six-cylinder developing 255 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. All models come with an eight-speed automatic transmission. 

A lengthy list of options and packages, including trick features like four-zone automatic climate control, automatic soft-close doors, active LED headlights, night vision and a full-color head-up display make the X5 one of the sportiest luxury SUVs around. The M Sport package, for example, bundles 19-inch wheels, an aero body kit, sport seats and a snappier transmission. 

A full suite of advanced tech and safety features includes a navigation system with 10.2-inch touchscreen, giving the X5 a contemporary electronic edge. A new 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat also makes for more flexible cargo arrangements. 

With a starting price of $53,725 for the sDrive35i, the X5 is more expensive than the Land Rover LR4, Mercedes-Benz M-Class or Porsche Cayenne base models. Add a few options to the X5 and you start encroaching on the more exclusive Land Rover Range Rover Sport.
