Cute car show rolls into Blandford Elementary

Cars watching "Cars." To be more specific, cute little imaginary cars watching a Disney "car"toon about cute little imaginary cars.

No, it wasn't Radiator Springs, this was the annual car show at Blandford Elementary School in Rowland Heights. The kindergartners were jockeying for pole position in their "box" cars.

We're not talking trains, though the 100 cars lined up end to end did look like a long freight rolling down the nearby tracks. The tykes had built their cars from big cardboard boxes.

The kindergartners created a little traffic jam as they cruised through the campus. Fortunately, some of the kids had constructed sheriff's cars to keep order, and a little ambulance stood by in case of an accident.

"Fortunately, there were no accidents. No one even got a traffic ticket," said teacher Trisha Johnson, who came up the the moving idea last year.

Eventually, all the kids found a parking place in the assembly room, which had been turned into a "drive-in" theater. The feature film was "Cars" naturally.

The Blandford instructor said the kids really enjoyed building their concept cars at home. Detroit has nothing on these families, who went all out with their cars.

Eli Descallar, 6, beamed as classmates admired a car drawn straight from the "Transformer" series.

"This is Optimus Prime," the kindergartner bragged, sitting in the little big rig with silver exhaust stacks and shiny grill.

Teachers passed out bags of popcorn as the kids settled back to watch Holley Shiftwell and Mater help McQueen win another race.

Some of the kids drove sports cars just as exotic as the ones in the movie. A little girl cuddled in a bright red Ferrari, complete with rearing stallion emblem. Another lounged in a bright, white Lamborghini. Just think how many boxtops that cost. A Formula One car looked fast just sitting there.

"We have four kindergarten classes here, with more than 100 students," said teacher Maryellen Whittingham. One child drove a large yellow school bus, complete with LED headlights. The little ambulance in the back glowed in the dark. Several drivers obviously belonged to the "Hello Kitty" car club.

"The whole school comes out for the car show at the end of the year, everyone wants to see how imaginative the cars are," said kindergarten teacher Maria Zonni.

Cosmetic upgrades over standard 4C models include a "carbon aerodynamic kit" that includes spoiler and door mirror covers, a rear aluminium diffuser, LED headlights with dark surrounds and bespoke alloy wheels. Buyers can choose from white or red paintwork.

Pricing for the 4C Launch Edition is yet to be confirmed, but Alfa Romeo says it will cost about 52,000. Standard 4C models are expected to cost less than 50,000.
