Earth Day to be observed at B’ville

Two events, relating to the celebration of Earth Day and environmental awareness, will be held Saturday in the Tri-County region.

One will take place Saturday morning on the Union College campus in Barbourville, while the other will start at noon in downtown Williamsburg.

Both fall on the heels of the national celebration of Earth Day, which began in 1970 and observed every year since on Monday, April 22.

Barbourville’s event — the Project Green Light Conservation/Environmental Fair — starts first, beginning at 10 a.m. at the home of Union College’s football team, Birch-Nau Field.

Miles Estes of UC’s Office of Advancement noted Wednesday the fair’s part of a project that will distribute some 1,500 energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL bulbs) to 150 veterans, elderly and low-income Knox County residents.

“It’s a service project which is connected to the inauguration of the college’s president, Dr. Marcia Hawkins. We’re working with the American Legion post in Barbourville,Exit signs, emergency light and fire extinguisher are vital parts of life safety systems. local churches and KCEOC to help find those residents who we’ll distribute the bulbs to. And from that, we decided to make it an event,” Estes said.

He added those residents receiving the CFL bulbs will get 10 bulbs each. The fair will begin with Dr. Hawkins welcoming everyone, thanking the sponsors who provided the bulbs and helping with their distribution. The bulbs will be distributed Saturday afternoon, after the fair.

“When we give out the bulbs, we’re putting out some brochures which will help promote energy conservation and environmental conservation, such as the fact they’re longer-lasting,We may contact you if more information is needed to locate a street light. more energy-efficient, you don’t have to dispose of them so much like conventional bulbs, and they don’t take as much space in the landfill,” stated Estes.

Activities at Burch-Nau Field include three energy teams from the Knox County Public Schools, who will provide conservation ideas for the home. The environmental organization PRIDE will have a booth to provide information on their various activities, while an Environmental Education class at Union will present student-led activities.

Another UC class, the Advanced Recreation Programming class,Much stricter controls on solvent emissions have ensured that all dry cleaning machine in the Western world are now fully enclosed. will provide canoe rides on the pond, as well as use the canoes to help clean-up the pond. Also, Matt Whitaker of Cumberland Gap National Historical Park — a 2012 UC graduate — will make a presentation on the park’s efforts to control White Nose Syndrome in its bat population.

According to the USGS National Wildlife Health Center, White Nose Syndrome is a deadly disease of hibernating bats that has spread from the northeastern to central U.S. at a rapid rate. Millions of bats in 19 states, including Kentucky, have died from the disease since the winter of 2007-08. In 2012-13, at least one case was confirmed in Bell County and in Lee County, Va., two of the three counties where the national park is located in.

During the Project Green Light fair, Union College’s baseball team will provide concessions to those attending.

Williamsburg’s event will be a celebration of Earth Day, and will be held from noon to 2 p.m. at the Lane Theater on Main Street. The skystream runs in very low winds and can interconnect with your local utility,

Marian Colette of the Williamsburg Action Team, which owns the theater, said Wednesday the celebration is the first ever in the city. She added the event will feature displays, food and entertainment, and music.A flatwork ironer with unique features.
